The True Measure of Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is one of those rare holidays that still feel special, unspoiled by the need to celebrate a whole month in advance.  Sure we make plans, shop, bake and travel. But it’s all in anticipation of that one day when you sit down with family and friends and enjoy the warmth of home, a good meal and reflect on what you have to be grateful for.

We are all blessed and our lists are long. So what should we do with them all our blessings?  Shall we put them in a big pile and admire them, hoarding them all to ourselves? Certainly not.

This year as I make my list of things I’m thankful for I’m challenged by this quote:

“It’s not what we say about our blessings. It’s how we use them that is the true measure of our Thanksgiving”.

What can we as individuals do for a neighbor, a local charity or someone who is going through a tough time? What can we as businesses, churches, schools and service organizations do for our communities?

This year we are asking our employees to select a cause they would like to support as a group. Between now and Christmas we will ask them to give to their chosen cause. Whatever they contribute as a group, JIT Toyota-Lift will put in a double-portion, in effect tripling the gift!

A friend recently said how much she loved Thanksgiving.  “There are no presents to buy, no hassle or expectations. . . just the people you love and lots of food.”

May your Thanksgiving celebration be amazing. May you be inspired to give your time, talents and resources to others.  And may your feelings of gratitude last longer than the day; may they extend well into the new year.
